A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
