RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
