The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
