The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
