Individuals who experienced abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism after their first encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to addressing the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Pushed

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has plagued the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to resolve the problem included an unprecedented summit on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American activist shared they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 nations, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a woman abused at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal story and appeared "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Changes

The group is advocating that changes to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and compiled materials that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned report highlighted the "necessity of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey expressed hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a move in the correct path," they stated.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can change how the story ends - he appreciated that."
